During
World War II, Julia served with the Office of Strategic Services in China,
Ceylon (today Sri Lanka), and Washington D.C. The office of Strategic Services
was a predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). After a period of
time in Washington, she was sent overseas and worked as a file clerk. Her
experience as a file clerk was monotonous and boring. She wore army fatigues,
traveled on the troop ships, and slept on cots. While in Ceylon, she met her
husband Paul Cushing Child.
