It was hard to pick a topic for history day because there are so many different people in history that have made such a difference in the lives of others. I started asking my family and classmates who I should research. There were many people to choose from, but I finally decided to choose Julia Child. I chose her because my family loves to cook. My mom even has her own cooking show on PBS. Julia Child also had her show on PBS. I always cook desserts for holidays and other special occasion, which my whole family enjoys.

The information I found was mainly from the internet. Internets sites such as The World Culinary Institute and American History gave helpful information on Julia Child’s life. I kept it organized by using note cards, each one a different topic in Child’s life. By the end of my research, I had twenty five cards providing insightful information. I also had some old VHS videos of her TV show that were very entertaining and helpful with the research. She had quite an unusual personality, which was very funny. She also wrote many cookbooks and a book about her life and her achievements. These were helpful in writing my report.

I chose the website category because Julia Child had her own cooking show. I could add endless information on a website and I could decorate it with pictures of Child’s past. She has a very interesting life, full of color, personality, and food I could fill a website with. I created this project by pulling out events in Julia Child’s life, elaborating on each topic. I started in class and every day, for about 45 minutes, I would work on it for about 2 weeks. I found pictures and books that filled my website with insightful information.

The theme of this year’s history day is The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies, that’s why I picked Julia Child. She made a huge impact in the culinary world, bringing the family together with her meals and personality. She made cooking colorful and rich to millions of people all over America. She has inspired my mom and I am sure many others. Because of her yearning to want to know more about food, she made an impact in kitchens all over America. She truly has been an individual in history and I hope that she will be remembered in history for as long as time goes.
